Tutorial Tuesdays! The XYZs of Folds in Zbrush (Super fast fold sculpting tutorial for beginners)

In what is quickly becoming my most popular video, I provide the easiest, quickest, most sure-fire fold sculpting tutorial on the ‘net. Create realistic clothing in zbrush in seconds! Even if you’re not an artist, or especially if you’re not an artist, this tutorial is for you!

  1. Apply a dark color to your sculpt.
  2. Paint stripes around your sculpt in a light color.
  3. Edit the stripes to feature X, Y, and Z “shapes.” This is accomplished by joining the stripes with angled lines.
  4. Mask according to intensity.
  5. Inflate!
  6. Edit the folds using the standard, clay tubes, pinch, move, and smooth brushes.
  7. Marvel at your artistry for a good 5 to 7 minutes!

That’s all there is to it! Here’s the result of the process as applied to the flight suit I’ve created for the PilotThings VR public beta, in-game:

Very soon I will upload the entire process of creating the flight suit, from sculpt to in-game. Be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel so that you don’t miss it! I hope to get to 500 subscribers by Oct. 5th, 2018 (exactly 1 year after my diagnosis)!

I hope you found this fold sculpting tutorial useful. If so, please like and subscribe and consider contributing to my brand new Patreon so that I can continue to produce great content while battling cancer!

* ION: I’ve recently launched https://openforcommissions.com. It is a central site for game developers to commission artists, and for artists to get paid. Currently it is invite only, but you can increase your chances to participate by linking your portfolio in the blog post comments!

* The paint and inflate technique comes from Ryan Kingslien’s book: ZBrush Studio Projects: Realistic Game Characters. Why it’s out of print and no longer available on Kindle, I don’t know. You can still pick it up used at a great price. It’s a great book and I can’t recommend it enough.

* Speaking of great books, if you’re interested in game development but can’t/don’t want to program, check out my book: No-Code Video Game Development Using Unity and Playmaker.
