#gameart – ZBrush Studio Projects: Realistic Game Characters by Ryan Kingslien

With my own book set to drop June 10th, I’ve been thinking about the books that helped me improve. One such book: ZBrush Studio Projects: Realistic Game Characters by Ryan Kingslien.

Unbeknownst to me, my artistic skills had stagnated. In the 7 or so odd years since first completing Modeling a Character in 3ds Max I hadn’t made any real artistic progress. The industry’s tech and techniques had changed and I hadn’t kept up. The biggest reason I hadn’t kept up: I was cheap (see also: poor) and thought I could get by on forum posts and youtube videos. Then I remembered one of my favorite adages, “knowledge is free but information costs.” I decided to spring for Ryan Kingslien’s ZBrush Studio Projects: Realistic Game Characters (at the time it was still available on Kindle for considerably less). The information contained within was well worth the money. In fact, never mind teaching ZBrush, the book could stand alone as anatomy reference! I highly recommend it for all aspiring digital artists.

After reading and working along with the book, my art evolved. I still consider myself a #gamedev first and foremost, but I’d like to think that I might now be able to pass for a game artist too. You be the judge! I’ll be posting some of my art from Star Foxy VR soon!

Hopefully, my book will be as helpful and influential as Mr. Kingslien’s! I also hope to capitalize on my book as successfully as Ryan. He now runs uartsy.com!
