Great Deformation!

Using this thing called “Skin Utilities,” which was mentioned in the most recent Tutorial Tuesday! post, I was able to iron out most of the feathery Rex’s jagged, exploding, starburst wrinkles. I’m working on uploading the repaired model to Sketchfab.com as we speak.

I’ve left the alpha planes, which will give the impression of unkempt feathers, until last. After lots of trial and error (mostly involving Fibermesh/hand-placing low poly feathers in Max), I’ve settled on adding the planes as InsertMeshes to the decimated Rex in zBrush.

As such, the alpha planes will be a separate object that mirrors the Rex’s animations. The reason being; if I can’t get them right by the deadline, I can easily cut them.
