The living nightmare of trying get Win7 touchscreen drivers to work on a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11e

Yesterday was only the beginning (actually, it was only the midpoint as the struggle began Tuesday). I was unable to get the Acronis restore point to boot. Using it to create the partition as a workaround for Win7’s inability to do so didn’t work either. Eventually I was able to create a partition using the CLI. Then I abandoned the restore point and went for a fresh install. Now I’m faced with another problem; getting the touchscreen to work.

Will it even? As mentioned yesterday, I’ve come to find that Lenovo has created multiple, similarly named versions of the Thinkpad 11e. There’s a Chromebook and a Windows version with 20D9 and 20DA variants. What’s the difference between the 9 and A? Who knows? The drivers page seems to be the only place Lenovo makes the distinction… and even there they’re not clear. To make matters worse, the 20DA designations persist across variants regardless of their yoga or lack yoga distinctions. That is to say, there’s a Lenovo Thinkpad 11e and a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11e, and each has a 20DA version. Get your shit together Lenovo. Hopefully all 6(?) Thinkpad 11e’s feature multi-pressure sensitivity. That’s the only reason I bought it.

Support? I should’ve headed the warnings in the product reviews. At each turn you’re expected to have your product serial number on hand; it’s several thousand digits long. There are multiple, disparate sign-up requests. The forums, support tickets, all require separate accounts. After reading the reprehensible privacy policy associated with the forums, I opted for the support ticket “service.” Here, if you don’t have your several thousand digits long serial number at the ready, they want to bill you for support. Oh, and there’s a privacy policy that governs the support ticket “service” too. But it seems you don’t get to read it until you’ve already created an account.

I settled on my favorite tech support system in the whole wide world. I already have an account there. And it has the added benefit of potentially publicly embarrassing companies into, at the very least, going through the motions. Twitter:

Meanwhile, @Acronis has already assured me that I’ll I have to do is DM them and they’ll help me troubleshoot yesterday’s fiasco. How wonderful would it be to wake up today to the sounds of tweeting solutions? To be continued…

    Yes, working with a Lenovo has been a major challenge. We’re told that the touchscreen will work with Windows 7, but no one will tell you how. If anyone has the answer, please tell me what I need to do. Thank you in advance!

    Hi, I just picked up a Yoga 11e w/ Win10 and touchscreen, and I’ve installed Win7 on it instead. Can’t seem to get the touchscreen working again. Did you have any success?

    Sadly, no. I needed pressure sensitivity and it seems the Yoga 11e doesn’t actually have that functionality, a non-feature which, judging by the hordes of Amazon questions, Lenovo isn’t very forthcoming about. Or rather, the laptops/tablets that do have that functionality don’t do enough to advertise it, leaving artists confused about which hardware they should buy. The only reliable site that I’ve found for distinguishing pressure sensitive hardware from merely touch is

    TL;DR: The Yoga didn’t do what I wanted so I sold it. Most likely I will never buy another Lenovo product again. I now use MS Surface which I may review in an upcoming blog post.
